As women over 40, we often find ourselves juggling numerous responsibilities. Between work, family, and other commitments, it’s easy to feel drained—physically, mentally, and emotionally. And when you’re low on energy, it’s tough to think about making big life decisions, like whether or not your career is still serving you. Especially as your health is starting to get glitchy.
But here’s the truth: you can regain your energy and take charge of your career at any age. I did it at age 43. I changed my location and career all in one go. I moved from Belgium to Spain to enjoy that healthier Mediterranean climate and lifestyle and regain my energy. And instead of looking for another admin job, I started my own businesses, as a Virtual Assistant and as a Vitality coach, Career & Business mentor. I’ve also helped other women do the same, even with debilitating health conditions like severe fibromyalgia and back pains. Just to say, if you want it, we can make it happen. Keep reading to learn more.
The key lies in making small, intentional changes that can lead to big results. And that’s my specialty!
Let’s break it down.
1. Simple Tweaks to Boost Your Energy
If you’ve been feeling like you’re running on empty, it’s time to make energy management a priority. Often, it’s not about doing more but about doing less—strategically. Here are three easy adjustments you can make today:
- Mini-breaks: A non-stop schedule might seem productive, but it’s actually counterproductive for your energy levels. Try taking short, frequent breaks throughout the day. Just 5 minutes of stretching, deep breathing, or stepping away from your desk can do wonders.
- Hydration: Fatigue is often a sign of dehydration. If you feel sluggish, try increasing your water intake throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up and continue sipping regularly. My Spanish neighbor is always astonished when I return from the supermarket and unload my water bottles for the week.
- Resting your eyes: If your work involves long hours in front of a screen, your eyes are likely strained, which leads to fatigue. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It’s a simple yet effective way to give your eyes a break and recharge.

2. Prioritize Your Career—It’s Never Too Late
Feeling burned out or stuck in a career that no longer excites you? You’re not alone. Many women after 40 begin to question whether their current path aligns with their values and long-term goals. The good news? It’s never too late to make a change.
Here’s why a career shift later in life can be so rewarding:
- Self-awareness: By this stage in your life, you’ve likely gained a better understanding of who you are, what you enjoy, and what kind of work environment helps you thrive. You can leverage this insight to make a more aligned career choice.
- Transferable skills: The years of experience you’ve built up—whether in management, communication, or specific technical skills—are incredibly valuable. And don’t forget everything you’ve learned in your personal life. Many of these skills are easily transferable to new roles or even your own business, giving you a head start when making a switch.
- Empowerment: There’s something incredibly empowering about taking control of your career. Whether it’s pursuing a passion, starting your own business, or seeking a new role, the change can give you a fresh sense of purpose and motivation.
If you’re considering working less, semi-retiring early, or designing a career that aligns with your desire for more sunshine and free time, now is the perfect time to start.
