For decades, I used to eat two slices of bread with margarine (not butter), nutella and a piece of soft cheese for breakfast. It was my normal. I thought it was a good breakfast. No questions asked. It is what it is. An hour later I was trembling and craving a mid-morning snack, but, yet again, we all thought that was normal. We were teenagers and later working, and we assumed we were just hungry because we were growing up, learning a lot or working.
Like so many of us born in the early 70s, we didn’t question breakfast. We didn’t ask questions like ‘Is this healthy’ or ‘Is this the best choice for me?’. It was an already healthier version then what my friends ate, but still, nobody questioned what our mothers put on the table. It was simply not done.
Now, as a vitality coach, career and business mentor, I support women on their journey to happier and healthier living. Many of my clients come to me because they’re tired, exhausted, dealing with fatigue, brain fog and lethargy. They used to be full of energy, with a crystal clear head, able to juggle ‘all the things’. And now, in their 40s, well, they’re not. It’s getting harder and harder. Things take longer to finish, they’re forgetful, distracted, stressed and irritated. And they’re tired of being tired.
One of the topics we talk about is breakfast. You don’t have to go through extreme measures to make a healthy breakfast. The truth is, that you can improve your energy simply and sustainably by focusing on nourishing your body with foods that are good for you. In this blog post, let’s let go of the concept of weight loss breakfasts and show you how to enjoy a satisfying and nutritious morning meal without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction.
Understanding Healthy Breakfast:
I believe that a healthy breakfast sets the tone for your entire day. It provides the essential nutrients your body needs to thrive. It’s not about deprivation or restriction or getting it done as fast as you can, but rather about nourishing your body with wholesome foods that support your overall health and well-being. When you’re thinking about breakfast and switching to a healthier breakfast, adding in healthy fats can already make a big difference. They’re good for your brain and give you sustainable energy.
Another important element is to watch out for sugar. Because the sugar rush may be exciting, like the roller coaster going up, it also must come down. And that drop in your blood sugar is a nightmare for your health and energy.
But the most important thing is to find a breakfast that work for YOU. You can have the most amazing breakfast option, but if it’s not a great fit for you, your body and lifestyle, quess how quick you’ll quit and revert back to your old ways…
Here are some breakfast ideas, to help inspire you, but the main thing I work on with clients is making it into something that helps them improve their energy and – key component – adapt it to their lifestyle. (often all it takes are some small tweaks)
Healthy Breakfast Ideas:
1. Avocado Toast with Poached Egg:
Start your day with a slice of whole-grain toast topped with mashed avocado and a perfectly poached egg. This delicious and satisfying breakfast is packed with heart-healthy fats, protein, and fiber to keep you feeling full and energized throughout the morning.
This sounds like a great option, and it is, but for most of my women short on time, poaching the egg is a bridge too far. So we tweak it.
2. Greek Yogurt Parfait:
Layer Greek yogurt with fresh berries, granola, and a drizzle of honey for a creamy and nutritious breakfast option. Greek yogurt is rich in protein, which helps keep you feeling satisfied, while the berries and granola add a burst of flavor and texture.
While this is a perfectly good breakfast, it’s not always the best fit for everyone’s body and situation.
3. Vegetable Omelette:
Whip up a veggie-packed omelet using eggs, spinach, tomatoes, and bell peppers for a nutrient-dense and satisfying breakfast. Eggs are an excellent source of protein, while the vegetables provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support your overall health.
This is, yet again, an amazing breakfast. But often, we need to tweak it.
A Healthy Breakfast for More Energy (and Without Diet)
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to go on weight loss breakfasts to eat healthy. By focusing on nourishing your body with wholesome foods and making simple lifestyle changes, you can realize your health goals sustainably and enjoyably. Instead of counting calories or restricting certain food groups, focus on eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
If your goal is to get your energy back, to feel great, and to improve your mental clarity, then remember that breakfast plays an important role in the process. Even though many people rave about skipping breakfast or fasting to boost energy, I believe you need to be a fully healthy person to do this. If you’re already struggling with fatigue and brain fog, making smaller tweaks and switching from a not-so-healthy breakfast (and lifestyle) to a healthier breakfast (and lifestyle) is what helped me get my health and energy back.
Remember, a small tweak goes a long way
